Puck In Midsummers Night Dream

Shakespeare introduces many interesting characters in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Ranging all different personality types, each character plays a somewhat important role in the story line. However, Puck seems to stand out from the rest. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Puck’s character plays the role of the jester, the source of truth and the mender. All of these roles combine to make him the most important figure in the play.

Puck the Jester

When the reader is first introduced to Robin Goodfellow, he or she finds him boasting about tricks he has played in the past. One is able to see right away, that Puck is easily amused. Therefore, it is no surprise when the tradesmen’s play strikes his interest.

Puck reveals his tendency to create mischief by saying, “I’ll be a member of the audience, and an actor too, perhaps if I get a chance” (38). It is, of course, Puck who is “behind” transforming “Bottom” into an “ass.” His intent was not malicious; it was only to make Bottom the “butt” of yet another joke.
